Hurling Food

20 Feb

So today has been a whirlwind. I’ve gone through at least 3 different post ideas and have eaten nothing of substance to report (it’s just been one of those days), so I’m just going to tell you about my day and leave you with food for thought, instead of thoughts about food.

I was supposed to go to my first hurling game today. For those of you not familiar with the Irish sport hurling, it’s a fast paced sport that’s quite like lacrosse except with essentially wooden paddles, their goal is a cross between a soccer goal and rugby post, they can bounce, scoop, throw, catch, bat, and basically do whatever the hell they want with the ball, and it looks terrifying to play. Our university was playing the big rival in town and it was supposed to be great fun, so we were going to go. In anticipation of the game, I was going to do a post on food for hurling, but open googling “hurling food” I quickly realized the error of my ways when the search results were, uh, varied.

Is this not the creepiest thing ever? That ball is a sliotar (slitter), and it’s the ball used in hurling.

I didn’t end up going to the hurling match because I had a paper due tomorrow that needed to be finished and locking myself in my apartment all day seemed to be the only realistic solution. I cooked myself scrambled eggs for lunch but they were a bit runny and 3 eggs turned into barely anything, so I’m still working up to my successful scrambled egg post.

Now, i said there that “I had a paper due tomorrow”. It’s not bad grammar- well it might be, I’m not sure there’s any grammar that can correctly describe this situation. But basically, I got an email about the death of student in the department, and because of her sudden passing, the due date for a paper was being pushed back from tomorrow to a later date. The confusion for me is that the way it was phrased, I’m not sure exactly what paper the email was referring to. I’m 90% it’s the one I’ve been writing, but there’s a 10% chance it’s something completely different and I still have a paper due. If that’s the case, I’m shit out of luck because I can’t access the site where I need to turn in the paper. It’s actually a shit show, this teacher doesn’t a clue. I’ve emailed him, and now I just hope he emails back before the deadline tomorrow.

This whole paper situation is a nightmare, but as I said there bitching to myself, I had to stop. A girl, 19 years old, is dead. I don’t know her personally, I don’t know what happened. But it doesn’t matter, none of it does. It puts everything into perspective when someone so young dies. I felt bad about spending the whole day worrying about writing my paper, or what I was going to cook that I could blog about. It’s all so insignificant when there’s a family who won’t get their daughter back.

So, I’m not going to post a recipe, or nutrition tips. I’m eating baked beans on toast for gods sake. No. I’m going to leave you with a request. Stop worrying about things. Stop fussing about truly insignificant things, no matter how big or important they might seem. Smile. Smile at a stranger, smile at the guy who holds the door open for you, smile at the girl who walks with her head down. Every person you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about- like the girls whose sister won’t come home for dinner anymore. Random acts of kindness never hurt anyone. Besides, life’s too short to be bitter.

I didn’t mean to get all insightful or cheesy, but these things just get you thinking. Life really is too short not to love every second of it.
